The postgraduate study for acquiring a PhD doctorate is completed upon development and defence of doctoral work (dissertation). Development of the dissertation is planned for the second and third year of study and upon its defence each student acquires 45 ECTS credits. Exceptionally, doctoral work may also refer to a group of published scientific papers followed by a critical review chapter which consists of introduction, discussion, conclusion and an extensive relevant reference list (so called the Nordic model). This form of work is only possible within research at the doctoral study and the scientific papers are due to be published after enrolment to the doctoral study.

Development of the doctorate is preceded by elaboration of the project (topic) of doctoral dissertation which is preceded by  doctoral dissertation topic approval. The aim of approval is scientific evaluation of doctoral dissertation project suggestion and of mentor’s competencies by relevant independent scholars.
